Title
An Ordinance approving the City of Lee's Summit's participation and membership in the Missouri Fire Fighters Critical Illness Trust and Pool, and authorizing the Mayor to execute such documents as may be necessary for the City's participation therein. (F&BC 9/7/22)
Body
Issue/Request:
The State of Missouri authorized the Missouri Fire Fighters Trust and Illness Pool (MFFCIT) allowing for more effective and timely financial support for the member who experiences such a circumstance.
Key Issues:
The purpose of MFFCIP is to put forth a program that equitably ends numerous years of contentious discussion at the legislature-due to conflicting studies on numerous fire operation’s carcinogens in the workplace and their causal relationship to some 17 identified cancers-between labor and management interests over presumption of cancer for firefighters. This program is a nontaxable accident coverage benefit intended to supplement or pay for the out-of-pocket expenses and provide additional compensation for other benefits such as experimental treatment as best determined by the fire fighter.
Proposed Committee Motion:
I move to recommend to the City Council for approval an Ordinance approving the City of Lee's Summit's participation and membership in the Missouri Fire Fighters Critical Illness Trust and Pool, and authorizing the Mayor to execute such documents as may be necessary for the City's participation therein.
Proposed City Council Motion:
FIRST MOTION: I move for second reading of an Ordinance approving the City of Lee's Summit's participation and membership in the Missouri Fire Fighters Critical Illness Trust and Pool, and authorizing the Mayor to execute such documents as may be necessary for the City's participation therein.
SECOND MOTION: I move for adoption of an Ordinance approving the City of Lee's Summit's participation and membership in the Missouri Fire Fighters Critical Illness Trust and Pool, and authorizing the Mayor to execute such documents as may be necessary for the City's participation therein.
Background:
The Missouri Fire Fighters Critical Illness Pool was created to aid the state’s fire professionals and agencies to contain the human and financial burdens created by serious health issues by providing cancer benefits to the state’s firefighters. The program was designed with input from the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri, State Council of Fire Fighters, Missouri Association of Fire Chiefs, as well as individuals from municipal, county and special district fire agencies.
