Title

A Resolution Expressing the Intent of the City Council Relating to Funding for the Police and Fire Departments if the Public Safety Sales Tax is Approved by the Voters of the City of Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Body

Issue/Request:

On January 4, 2022 the City Council of the City of Lee’s Summit, Missouri approved an Ordinance asking the voters to consider whether the City of Lee’s Summit should levy a city sales tax in the amount of one-half percent (1/2%) for Public Safety Purposes. The ballot question calling for the proposed Public Safety Sales Tax provides specifically that all new funds must be utilized for “Public Safety Purposes”. In order to provide transparency and clarity to voters regarding the intended expenditure of the resulting sales tax revenues, the City Council desires to express its intention related to the use of any new funds that may be generated by the Public Safety Sales Tax referenced above and to ensure a sustained level of funding at least equal to the current (FY 2020/21) audited amounts from the General Fund is assigned to both the Police and Fire Departments.

The expressed intent of the City Council of the City of Lee’s Summit that no less than $42,000,000.00 be allocated from the General Fund to the Police and Fire Departments during future budget years should the referenced public safety sales tax be approved by the voters of the City of Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Proposed City Council Motion:

I move for adoption of a Resolution Expressing the Intent of the City Council Relating to Funding for the Police and Fire Departments if the Public Safety Sales Tax is Approved by the Voters of the City of Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
