Presentation:  Advisory Commissions Realignment Strategy

Body

Issue/Request:

Stephen Arbo, City Manager, will review a concept to align several of the 21 Citizen Committees and Commissions existing today within the seven critical success factors established in the Ignite! Strategic Plan. The goal is to create two “umbrella committees” to create synergy by: a) blending the Beautification Commission, Arts Council and Historic Preservation Commission and b) blending the Health Advisory Education Board with the Human Services Advisory Board.

For illustration purposes, Stephen Arbo and Glenda Masters, Cultural Arts Manager will show how the blending of the Beautification Commission, Arts Council, and Historic Preservation Commission activities would work. The proposed change is to help advise the Council on policy and programs related their respective areas as well to participate in related community planning and programming. We also think a better level of administrative support may be available to each of these “umbrella committees” under this new concept.

Our request of the Council is to allow the creation of these two more broadly defined citizen committees. If we receive the City Council’s approval to proceed, we will also develop rules for more consistent management of Boards and Commissions.
