Title

Police Department Re-accreditation

Body

Issue/Request:

This presentation provides a summary of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) accreditation process, and the City of Lee's Summit Police Department's (LSPD) efforts towards achieving re-accreditation in 2021.

Key Issues:

-CALEA requires re-accreditation every four years. This is LSPD's effort for their fourth accreditation process.

-An on-site based assessment was conducted by CALEA in April of 2021.

-CALEA awarded LSPD accreditation on July 16, 2021 after a commission review

Background:

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority through the joint efforts of law enforcement’s major executive associations. The CALEA Accreditation program seals are reserved for use by those public safety agencies that have demonstrated compliance with CALEA Standards and have been awarded CALEA Accreditation by the Commission.

The City of Lee's Summit Police Department (LSPD) was last re-accredited for the third time in 2016. LSPD is required to provide proofs of accreditation standards annually and has done so under the guidance of Accreditation Manager Tanisha Artis since then.

In order to maintain accreditation, agencies must undergo a re-accreditation evaluation every four years. LSPD was recently successful in obtaining re-accreditation after an on-site based assessment in April of 2021. The Commission awarded accreditation to LSPD on July 16, 2021 after a review hearing.

The reaccreditation process entails providing proofs demonstrating compliance with 458 standards based upon nationally recognized procedures for excellence in policing. The employees of LSPD all contributed to an effort that led to a glowing review by experienced CALEA assessors. The positive relationship between LSPD and the community was well-reflected in the Commission's report.
