Title

Realignment Plan for Citizen Boards and Commissions

Body

Issue/Request:

Mr. Arbo will present conceptual plan to realign some citizen boards and commissions with the seven “Critical Success Factors” of our Ignite! Strategic Plan to help advise the Council on policy and programs related their respective areas as well to participate in related community planning and programming.

Many of our existing Citizen Committees and Commissions were created as a result of previous Strategic Plans, such as “Lee’s Summit 360”. Our goal today is to keep the spirit and purpose of those committees and commissions, but ask how we can align the work of citizens more closely with today’s strategic plan and the seven Critical Success Factors.

The Mayor and Mr. Arbo met with all the existing committee and commission chairs to discuss how to retain the important work of those  groups while building a new structure to align with the Ignite! plan. This resulted in a plan to combine certain committees and commissions to create opportunities for synergy among broader-scoped commissions allowing common interests to work closely together to affect greater impact for our community.  These Commissions  may also allow for great types of participation roles amongst the public including sub committees, volunteer activities, etc. that require less/different commitment that serving on a Commission.

This realignment will also allow for more adequate staffing resources to be fully, regularly  committed to these commissions including an Assistant City Manager,  key subject matter staff professions, and other critical support staff.

We will also develop rules for more consistent management of Boards and Commissions. Mr. Head will review the general concepts in the presentation.
