Progress Update: Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity's Home Preservation Program funded through 2020-21 CDBG monies

Body

In March 2020, City staff proposed to the Community and Economic Development Council (CEDC) that Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity use Community Development Block Grant Funds (CDBG) to offer Lee's Summit qualified homeowners a home repair program in place of the City's Minor Home Repair Program. Staff determined that this transition would result in an increased number of improvements/homeowners benefiting from the program due to Habitat's resources (volunteer labor, donations, etc.), as well as an increase in the types of improvements that could be made. This recommendation was adopted as a part of the CDBG 2020-21 Annual Action Plan by City Council in April 2020.

Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity was awarded $125,500 in CDBG funding for the 2020-21 program year, and their contract with the City was fully executed in September 2020. In October, Habitat advertised the availability of funds for Lee's Summit residents and began accepting applications. Habitat has received 12 applications to-date, 11 which meet their program qualifications and are eligible. Habitat anticipates the completion of 15 improvement projects by their contract deadline (December 31st, 2021), and will begin construction on projects in April 2021.

Habitat will give a presentation to CEDC and be available to answer questions.
