Title

An Ordinance adding a new Section 26-10. Street name change - City Initiated; in Article I. General. of Chapter 26 - Streets, Sidewalks, and Other Public Places, dealing generally with the process for a street name change initiated by the City.

Body

During the Council meeting on December 1, 2020 the City Council discussed the potential renaming of Todd George Parkway and Todd George Road.  Discussion was also held related to the process included in the Unified Development Ordinance and ultimately the desire of the Council to consider a different process.  The City Council directed Staff to prepare an alternate process for inclusion in the Code or Ordinances that could be used for a City initiated name change.  The process developed provides that the Council is to direct staff an ordinance that proposes a renaming.  That ordinance would include the street or streets subject to potential renaming and the proposed new name(s) for any such street(s).  At that time, a date would be set for a hearing before the City Council.  Notice of that hearing would be mailed to each property with an address on the street that is the subject of the proposed name change.  Additionally, notice would be provided in the form of signs in various locations along the route and via publication in the newspaper.  The Council would hold a public hearing consistent with normal public hearing procedures and would then be a able to decide whether or not to change the name of the street or even to submit a question to the electors.  The procedure preserves the full legislative authority of the City Council.

I move for adoption of an Ordinance adding a new Section 26-10. Street name change - City Initiated; in Article I. General. of Chapter 26 - Streets, Sidewalks, and Other Public Places, dealing generally with the process for a street name change initiated by the City.
