Discussion Item: A Resolution creating the City of Lee’s Summit Diversity and Inclusion Commission.

Issue/Request:
In August and September of 2020 the City Council reviewed and discussed the possible formation of a Commission for Diversity and Inclusion. During those meetings, Councilmembers suggested certain changes including items of clean up from the original resolution. Staff has made the changes that were identified as clean up. You will note in the document that there are various areas highlighted in yellow. These represent discussion points where staff needs further direction from City Council. Broadly, these fall into roughly three issues:
- Whether or not it is the intention of the Council to utilize the Commission to foster a community wide discussion or if the scope is more narrow and applies only to City government.
- How to refer to minorities or minority groups.
- How the end product of the Commission should be titled. Currently its listed as a “Values Mandate”, another idea during the previous meeting was to title it a “Values Statement”.
Staff is seeking guidance as to these remaining items. This resolution is place on the agenda for discussion only so that Staff may know the desire of the Council related to these items and any others the Council may have. We anticipate that after receiving further direction from Council, this resolution would be presented to the Council for consideration and possible adoption.
