Presentation of the Government Finance Officers Association Distinguished Budget Presentation Award
Key Issues:
Based on the examination of the budget document by a panel of independent reviewers, the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the City of Lee's Summit, Missouri for the Fiscal Year 2020 budget document. In order to receive this award, a governmental unit must publish a budget document that meets criteria as a policy document, as a financial plan, as an operations guide, and as a communications device. This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. Its attainment represents a significant achievement for the City of Lee's Summit.

Background:
The benefit of participating in the GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards program is the opportunity to receive comments from other public finance professionals on how to improve transparency regarding policy direction and programming as it relates to the expenditures of public funds. As a result of the awards process, City staff reviews and discusses the suggestions that have been provided as a part of the award process.

"GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program (Budget Awards Program) in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA's best practices on budgeting and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.
