This presentation provides a summary of the American Public Works Association (APWA) accreditation process, and the City of Lee's Summit Public Works Department's (LSPW) efforts towards achieving re-accreditation in 2020.
Key Issues:
· -LSPW was first accredited by APWA in 2004.
· -APWA requires re-accreditation every four years. LSPW was re-accredited in 2008, 2012, and 2016, and has applied for re-accreditation in 2020.
· -LSPW's re-accreditation virtual site visit is scheduled for Sept. 21-23.
· -LSPW seeks the City Council's support of its re-accreditation efforts.
Background:
The American Public Works Association (APWA) is a national association that supports the Public Works profession. Among their many programs is the accreditation program.
The City of Lee's Summit Public Works Department (LSPW) began its initial effort to obtain accreditation in 1997 and was successful in obtaining accreditation in 2004. LSPW is proud that it was the 16th agency in the United States, the 2nd in Missouri, and the first in the Kansas City metropolitan area to achieve APWA accredited status. Since that time, nearly 150 Public Works agencies have become accredited.
In order to maintain accreditation, agencies must undergo a re-accreditation evaluation every four years. LSPW was successful in its first three re-accreditation efforts in 2008, 2012, and 2016, and is now seeking re-accreditation in 2020.
Re-accreditation is an on-going process, with continuous improvement sought by all LSPW staff. It is a department-wide effort that engages staff from all five LSPW divisions. LSPW is directly responsible for 27 Chapters (functional areas) identified in the 9th edition of the Public Works Management Practices Manual. LSPW will be evaluated for compliance with the practices outlined in each chapter during a virtual site visit Sept. 21-23, 2020.
