Title

Presentation by the University of Central Missouri and Summit Technology Academy regarding Aviation Collaboration

Body

Issue/Request:

The University of Central Missouri (UCM) and Summit Technology Academy (STA) are in the early phases of developing three aviation related programs including an avionics program, pilot program, and unmanned drone program.  The primary work to date has been geared toward the avionics program. The two schools are looking at an alternative path from the typical four year college degree towards more of a technical school where graduates can enter an in demand and high paying position.

UCM and STA have identified and engaged with companies in the avionics industry, economic development groups and local governments.  Lee's Summit Administration and Public Works were invited to an introductory meeting several months ago which later resulted in a meeting with Mayor Bill Baird. The Mayor has agreed to support the concept and to collaboratively work on the development of the program. An Advisory Board has been formed and Mayor Baird and Bob Hartnett have been asked to participate as board members.

The purpose of the presentation is to bring the BOAC up to date on the current status of the program and to seek guidance and support as the program develops.
