Title

National Flood Insurance Program and the Community Rating System

Body

Issue/Request:

Flood insurance can be very expensive for owners of property within the FEMA-designated Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), also known as the 100-year floodplain.  As a community that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), the City of Lee’s Summit has the opportunity to utilize FEMA’s Community Rating System (CRS) to help reduce the cost of flood insurance premiums to property owners.

Background:

Since 1978, the City of Lee’s Summit has participated in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), thereby providing property owners the opportunity to purchase Federally-backed flood insurance policies.

The Community Rating System (CRS) supports the NFIP by recognizing communities whose activities exceed the minimum NFIP standards.  Such community credits provide discounts to flood insurance premiums that range from 5% to 45%.
