Title

Presentation by the 2016 Lee's Summit Charter Review Commission.

Body

In 1996, voters in the city of Lee's Summit overwhelmingly voted to redefine the structure of government for the city, changing from the Fourth Class City designation that was established in 1877 and adopt a Charter proposed by the elected Charter Commission.  Section 14.8 in the Charter states "From time to time, but no less often than every ten years, the Council shall provide for a Charter Review Commission to review this Charter and to recommend to the voters of the city proposed amendments, if any, to this Charter".  In compliance with this provision, the first Charter Review Commission was created in 2006, recommendations were presented to the voters and the Charter was amended accordingly.

The second Charter Review Commission was formed by the City Council in 2015 with the passage of Resolution No. 15-18.  The Commission began deliberations on January 11, 2016 and held meetings twice a month, with a final meeting on November 29, 2016.  Recommended amendments to the Charter are complete and ready to be presented to voters at the April 4, 2017, municipal election.
