Issue/Request:
World Cup 2026 Preparedness - City Code Amendments. The proposed Ordinance is a companion piece to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) Amendments, that were considered by the Community & Economic Development Committee (CEDC) in August. This draft Ordinance would amend City Code and temporarily modify the regulation of play streets (block parties) and parades.
Background:
The Kansas City Region is a host region for the 2026 World Cup and is expected to welcome 650,000 visitors throughout the duration of the tournament. In preparation for the tournament, City staff have reviewed a host of items regulated by the City Code and UDO, that may require temporary adjustment in an effort to prepare for visitors and tourists, improve allocation of City resources during this busy period, and support community stakeholders, businesses, and residents. In August, the CEDC considered amendments to the UDO that would temporarily modify the regulation of signs, food trucks, fireworks, and special event permits. The proposed Ordinance would amend the City Code to temporarily modify the regulation of play streets (block parties) and parades.
