Discussion: Renaming the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport and the City's FBO Services.
Background:
Chapter 4.2 of the 2021 Airport Business Plan, describes the necessity of rebranding the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport. Part of this effort includes renaming both the airport, and the fixed base operator, FBO. This evolutionary process is necessary as the airport grows beyond its current municipal designation. Benefits of a rebranding campaign include:
• Ensure airport is geographically identifiable
• Enhance customer outreach
• Inspire an image of quality infrastructure and amenities
• Inspire an image of quality customer service
• Attract corporate based aircraft
• Enhance economic development growth
• Enhance airport revenues
To date, staff has conducted surveys on both the airport and FBO names, held discussions within the aviation community, presented findings to the Board of Aeronautical Commissioners, BOAC, and discussed recommendations with the BOAC.
Multiple names for the airport have been discussed, including Lee’s Summit Regional Airport, Lee's Summit Executive Airport, Kansas City Regional Airport, Kansas City Executive Airport, Greater Kansas City Regional Airport, Heart of America Air Center, and Western Missouri Regional.
With the construction of the eastside infrastructure and Hangar 2 projects underway, and the 2026 World Cup taking place in the Kansas City area, now is the time to rename the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport.
The expected outcome of this discussion is a consensus on the new Airport name and FBO name. Assuming consensus is reached, Staff will draft a Resolution to adopt the proposed Airport name.
