Presentation: 2026 Legacy Blast event - Consideration of Enhancements for USA 250th and World Cup

Body

Issue/Request:

2026 Legacy Blast Event - consideration of enhancements for USA 250th and World Cup

Key Issues:

Since 2002 the City has partnered with the Parks and Recreation Department to provide an annual community fireworks event to celebrate Independence Day.  Each year the City allocates $50,000 - $55,000 within the general fund budget to provide resources for the event.  With this years' event celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States, as well as Kansas City hosting World Cup games and events, staff is looking for guidance on whether to allocate additional funding to enhance the event for 2026.

The general fund does not have capacity to provide enhanced funding for this years' event, however funding from the Business and Industry Fund reserve or the General Fund reserve fund could be considered for a one-time allocation for any enhancements.

Staff will provide a brief presentation and seek guidance and direction from the Finance and Budget Committee.

Committee Recommendation

Committee Recommendation:

If in favor of allocating additional funding to enhance the event:  I move to direct staff to bring forward a budget amendment to allocate $_______ from the Business and Industry Fund (or General Fund) reserve balance for a one-time allocation for the 2026 Legacy Blast event.

If not in favor of additional funding for the event:  no motion is necessary
