Issue/Request:
An Ordinance awarding Bid 2025-019 to Independent Salt Company for roadway deicing salt for a period of one year with four possible one-year renewals and authorizing the City Manger to execute an agreement for the same.
Key Issues:
· Public Works utilizes salt during winter weather storms to treat streets in Lee's Summit.
· Salt is the most cost-effective material for deicing roadways during winter weather.
· Salt is spread during the road treatment process where the operator sets the application rates determined by the Snow Manger.
· Public Works have two salt domes for salt storage located at the Maintenance Facility. The two domes hold enough salt to last through an average winter.
· This contract will be utilized to replenish salt supplies after winter.
Proposed Committee Motion:
FIRST MOTION; I move to recommend to City Council An Ordinance awarding Bid 2025-019 to Independent Salt Company for roadway deicing salt for a period of one year with four possible one-year renewals and authorizing the City Manger to execute an agreement for the same.
Background:
The City of Lee's Summit have utilized cooperative salt contracts with Mid America Regional Council (MARC) in the past for salt supplies. The last cooperative contract expired and the City was able to issue its own bid for more favorable pricing of deicing salt. Public Works have two salt domes located at the Maintenance Facility for storing salt. The domes are both currently full and combined hold a total of 6000 tons of salt, enough to last for an average winter. Salt used during winter weather is restocked in the spring after winter is over.
