Issue/Request:
The proposed ordinance establishes new compensation levels for Mayor, Council members, Mayor Pro Tempore, and Municipal Judges that would take effect on May 1, 2026.
Key Issues:
Compensation and allowances for elected officials were last revised in Ordinance 7842 approved in March, 2016, with an effective date of May 1, 2018.
The City Charter establishes that the City Council may determine compensation levels for all City elected officials. State law restricts elected officials from increasing their own compensation during their current term of office so the proposed ordinance includes an effective date of May 1, 2026, for all proposed revisions. The ordinance also sets compensation for car allowances and communications allowances for all elected officials.
Existing compensation levels and allowance levels would remain in effect until May 1, 2026, so that changes would all take effect at the same time and would comply with state statutory requirements that Council members compensation not be changed during their current term.
Proposed rates reflect an approximate annual 3% inflationary adjustment as shown in the attached calculation chart.
