Discuss the Police Department's expanded use of automated license plate readers to improve safety and investigative capabilities
Key Issues:
• The police department has used automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology since 2013
• This technology has assisted in homicide investigations, missing persons, and locating parties wanted for serious violent crimes.
• The Lee's Summit Police Department currently has one mobile ALPR system and no fixed systems.
• ALPR systems are utilized to a much higher degree by other law enforcement agencies in the region.
• Lee's Summit ordinance number 7386 restricts the police department from using fixed ALPR systems.
• Police Chief Travis Forbes supports using fixed ALPR systems to improve the investigative capabilities for the police department and to better protect the City from criminal threats.
• The Lee's Summit Public Safety Advisory Board has expressed support for the expansion of ALPR and the use of fixed systems.
Background:
This presentation intends to describe current limitations, policies, and how the police department seeks to utilize automated license plate reader technology in the future.
