Body

Issue/Request:

An Ordinance approving an agreement between the City of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Life Scan Wellness Centers for the purchase of comprehensive hands on physicals for all public safety employees, and authorizing the City Manager to execute the same of on behalf the City

Key Issues:

Annual comprehensive hands-on physicals for public safety employees are critical to ensuring the health, safety, and effectiveness of these essential workers. Public safety employees, such as firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical personnel, face high levels of physical and mental stress, exposing them to unique health risks. Regular physical examinations can identify underlying conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or respiratory issues, which may compromise their ability to perform their duties effectively or put their lives at risk during emergencies. Early detection through annual physicals not only protects the employees but also ensures public safety by maintaining a workforce capable of responding to critical situations without limitations.

In addition to individual health benefits, mandatory physicals contribute to organizational readiness and liability mitigation. Public safety roles demand peak physical fitness, and comprehensive assessments ensure employees meet the rigorous standards required for their duties. By identifying potential health issues early, organizations can implement intervention strategies, such as fitness programs or medical treatment, reducing absenteeism and improving productivity. Moreover, these exams help employers proactively address occupational hazards, reducing the risk of injury or illness on the job and, consequently, lowering workers' compensation claims and associated costs.

This ordinance authorizes the City Manager to enter into an agreement with Life Scan Wellness Centers to provide comprehensive hands on physicals for all public safety employees.
