Body

Issue/Request:

This request is to allow the use of the City's fire department training facility, equipment and fire department personnel as needed and listed within the agreement to provide assistance to the school district in delivering a career pathway program for high school students to obtain certifications needed to enter the fire service workforce upon completion and graduation.

Key Issues:

Proposed City Council Motion:

I move for adoption of an Ordinance approving a Memorandum of Understanding between LSR7 and the City of Lee's Summit for the Fire Department to provide assistance to the school district for a fire science career pathway program and authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement for the same.

Background:

LSR7 and Summit Tech Academy administrators approached the fire department in 2023 to inquire about interest in partnering with them in delivering a new career pathway program to prepare high school students to gain necessary knowledge and certifications to enter the fire sciences workforce upon graduation. This was refined into the agreement the council is now asked to consider and is supported by the fire department as we understand the value in our participation in regard to regional presence with the program as well as the potential to enhance our recruitment initiatives in sustaining a diverse and capable workforce.

Impact/Analysis:

The anticipated impact of this program is an enhancement to the overall candidate pool not only for the City of Lee's Summit Fire Department, but to the regional applicant pool as a whole. It is also anticipated that with the fire department's direct involvement we would have the advantage of early recognition of highly qualified applicants and will allow the early recruitment efforts to attract those potential employees to come apply and work for the City.

Timeline:

Start: October 2024

Finish: As determined by the requirements listed within the MOU
